When you’re out on the water, it’s easy to excite and forget about sun protection. We spend hours standing in the sun, trying to catch a fish. A lot of people don’t like to use sun cream (myself included) as fish don’t like the smell. If you were to get some on your bait, forget about bites. So with that being the case, the other alternative is to get some good fishing shirts.

There are plenty of men’s fishing shirts out there, but what is the right one? You need something comfortable, breathable, and with great sun protection. A good men’s fishing shirt will have all of these qualities. But be careful as there are plenty of inferior products that won’t give you the protection you need.

On The Water

Fishing In The Sun – Long Sleeve Fishing Shirts

If you’re sitting out in a boat, the sun is going to be hitting you from the top and the bottom (bouncing off the water) Even if you’re in the shade, you will still get this reflection off the water. You need a shirt that can breathe, is comfortable, and has good sun protection. A long sleeve is always a good option. If you’re going to be spending the whole day in the sun, sweating, you want something that can also pull the moisture off the skin.

Fishing In The Sun – Short-Sleeve Fishing Shirts

When fishing in the sun, A long sleeve is always the recommended option. But some people don’t like the feel, or the look, or think they’re too heavy. So there is a great range of short sleeve options as well. Although they can’t offer the same sun protection rating as their long sleeve counterparts, you still have plenty of choices.

Stay Protected

No matter what type of fishing you’re doing, whether it is out on a boat deep sea, river, or fishing the banks, sun protection is very important. Whichever shirt you choose, make sure it has a good UPF rating of at least 30, the higher the better. Heat stroke is a very real thing, killing on average 600 people a year in the US alone. 65% of those have been from non-exercise cases.

But with the right protection, you don’t have to be one of these cases. Cover up, drink plenty of water and stay in the shade as much as possible. So get out there, stay safe, and catch some fish.
