Kids Fishing Clothes (Get Them Protected)

One of the biggest joys in my life is being able to take my son out fishing. Although he is only young, he loves to go out no matter where I want to go. Funnily enough, I spend more on kids fishing clothes than I do on my own.

I’m happy just putting on some old pants, a bunnings hat, and off I go. My son, on the other hand, I want to make sure is protected properly.

Before I leave the house, my wife is nagging me. Not to make sure that I’m covered up, but to be sure our son is. Now, I hate using sun cream. It smells bad, it’s oily, if it gets on the bait the fish won’t bite, and it’s bad for the environment.

I will only ever put it on his face, so that leaves the rest of his body. That’s when you need some good kids’ fishing clothing.

Hat

The first thing you need is a good fishing hat If you’re going to spend hours in the sun ( or even 30 minutes) you want to make sure that you have a good fishing hat.

For me, I will genuinely just put on a cap, but for him, I want a full 360-brim or bucket fishing hat. They offer protection for the face and neck, while not obstructing the view.

I like to go one further and get a hate that also has a neck flap as well. As I’m sure you are aware, the reflection of the water can be just as bad if not worse than direct sunlight. It can be hard to find a good hate that also has a neck flap.

The best one that I have found is the:

JAN & JUL Kids’ GRO-with-Me Aqua-Dry Adventure Hat | 50+ UPF Wide Brim Water-Repellent Sunhat.

JAN & JUL Kids' GRO-with-Me Aqua-Dry Adventure Hat | 50+ UPF Wide Brim Water-Repellent Sunhat.

It looks good, it’s comfortable, comes in many sizes, colors and patterns is adjustable, and comes with a chin strap. With an iits50+ UPF rating, you have total ease of mind, And that’s why I bought 3.

Shirt

So many companies make great fishing shirts these days, and it’s hard to find the right one. A few things to take into consideration when choosing a shirt for your little one.

  • Breathable
  • Comfort
  • Style
  • Light or heavy depending on conditions
  • Long sleeve

I have previously talked about shirts in another post, you can check it out here. https://getreelfishin.com/mens-fishing-shirts-get-protected/.

Most of these sizes start at X-Small, so if you’re looking at something even smaller you can’t go past the Kids’ PFG Terminal Tackle Vintage Poster Long Sleeve Shirt from Columbia.

Jacket

Depending on the conditions, a jacket is always a good idea. Even when it’s warm out, I will always take one with us just in case. The weather can sometimes change very quickly, the wind might pick up, and ey might get wet or even fall in. Having something warm for them can also help to extend your fishing trip because they are less likely to want to go home early b. After all, they are cold.

When choosing a jacket you want to make sure it is light enough and can fold down so it doesn’t take up much room in the fishing bag (more room for fishing gear)

Sometimes, you want something with a bit more protection. These can be heavier and bulkier but are worth taking on those colder days.

Shoes

When choosing the right footwear, you want to consider

  • Weight
  • Waterproof
  • Grip
  • Quality

Different conditions require different footwear. Sure, sometimes something light like flip-flops is an easy way to go if you are fishing off the beach. Maybe not so appropriate off the rocks, on the river, or on a slippery boat.

When you think of boat shoes you probably think of those bulky-looking things with laces along the side. They’re fine if you are going out sailing, but not so practical for fishing. you want something light and waterproof.

A good pair of Crocs were always my go-to, but now I’m leaning more toward sketchers.

The comfort alone is enough to warrant a switch, but they are also very lightweight, good quality and most importantly, look good. I got my son a pair of Unisex-Child Cali Gear Guzman Stepz Sneakers. They are great, doesn’t matter if they get wet, not expensive and he can wear them all day without complaint.

On the rocks or river, you need something a little more sturdy. The BOYS’ ELITE FLEX- WASICK are a great shoe for all occasions. They can still handle getting wet, but offer added grip and durability while still being extremely comfortable for all-day wear.

That’s a Wrap

The most important thing is to make sure they are comfortable. Even if they don’t catch a fish if they are happy they will want to come back and do it again. And that’s what’s important. Remember, a family that fishes together stays. If you have any comments or questions feel free to leave them below.
