What Are The Best Fishing Knot Tying Tools?

While we were young, and our eyes were still working properly, tying a fishing knot wasn’t a problem.  You probably didn’t think you needed Fishing Knot Tying Tools. Unfortunately, we had to grow up. Our eyes got worse, our hands got shaky and the knots got harder.

With so many knots you can use, it’s hard to know the right one to use in each circumstance. For instance, the knot you use for tying a hook isn’t the best for tying on a lure. The one you use for tying a lure won’t work with a fly.

The list goes on. For a rundown on some of the best knots to use, learn and when to use them, follow this link to Best Knot For Fishing (And How To Tie)

Now, it might not just be old age that is making it difficult. External factors such as low light, a rocking boat, and weather can all be factors. Have you ever tried to tie a fishing knot with cold hands? Not so easy I can tell you, and you can’t tie a knot with gloves on.

The Best Fishing knot Tying Tools

Where there might be a lot of Fishing Knot Tying Tools around, and a lot of inferior and poorly made products that just don’t do what they claim to be able to. In this post, I have piled together a list of the top 5 tools around to make the choice easier for you.

Not all fishing knot tying tools will do the same thing, so you need to find the right one for you and the fishing you will be doing.

Of all the different tools in this list, the Fishing needleeedle and Knot Kneedle Elite probably tie the most knots with as many as 20 possible. It’s quite small and comes with a badge clip so can be easily attached to a jacket or bag.

At just 2.5 inches long and weighing only 6 grams you may think it’s too small for the job, but it’s not.

The Knot Kneedle is also very easy to use and can be used by beginners to tie those difficult knots, to long-time anglers that just want an easier and faster way to get back into the water. If you suffer from poor eve sight, arthritis, or struggle with finger dexterity, then this is a great tool.

It comes with easy-to-follow instructions on tying all your knots (not going to list them all as there are too many)

This will probably be the last knot tying tool I will buy, as long as it’s looked after or not lost. It has a soft rubber gripper to grip the line, which helps to maintain the integrity of the tippet. The extra grip makes tying flies, hooks, swivels, lures, and jigs a breeze.

And for peace of mind, it comes with a one-year honesty warranty, something that is quite rare with knot tying tools. One of my favorite tools in my fishing arsenal.

Pros

  • Over 20 different knots
  • Simple design and easy to use
  • Comes with Instructions and videos for your knots
  • Original and Elite models available
  • Small, compact, and light
  • Comes with badge clip
  • 1 Year warranty

Cons

  • Quite expensive
  • Original model series ng a little hard to depress
  • doesn’t have clippers

Verdict 8/10

HOOK-EZE Fishing Knot Tying Tool

HOOK-EZE Fishing Knot Tying Tool

I’ve started with the Hook-EZE because of its simplicity. Not designed to tie the knot, but to make it safe to do so (no more hooks in the fingers) This handy tool will hold hooks from 4/0 down to a 28 safely and securely.

This is great in cold conditions, when the boat is rocking, or just when it takes you a couple of times to thread that hook, swivel, jig heads, and speed clips for attaching lures.

Very simple to use and is great for joining line to line when tying on flies – and joining your backing line to the tippet. Also, works well when tying braided line to mono using a Blood or Yucatan knot. Hook-Eze is awesome for tying a Bimini twist as the built-in swivel helps create the twists in the line. It also has a stainless steel cutter to neaten up your line when you finish.

With the built-in clip, the Hook-EZE is set up for transferring your already set-up rod to the next location. You simply put the hook into the Hook-EZE, close the cover and attach it to a rod eye. No more getting hooks caught on material or worse yourself.

I found this product does exactly what it says it will do through its simple design. It might not have as many tools or features as so of the other products on the market, but for what it is and does it’s a great design.

Pros

  • Very inexpensive
  • Simple to use
  • Lightweight
  • Makes tying hooks safer
  • Great for cold conditions, rocking boats
  • Good for transferring reset-put up a gear
  • Built-in stainless steel cutter

Cons

  • Not for tying the knot
  • Plastic cover doesn’t feel premium

Built with quality stainless steel, it is still very lightweight. The SF Fly Fishing Zinger Knot Tying Tool has many functions such as a line knot picker, hook sharpener, jig eye cleaner, and line clippers. This is all held in place by a D-ring and retractable zinger.

The SF Fly Fishing Zinger is a great-looking tool, with its metallic finish for all the colors that it comes in. The four main tools of this product make it very handy for most of your knot-tying needs. For fly-fishing or use with heavier lines, I would heavily recommend, for lighter lines, maybe not the best product for the job.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Stainless steel
  • Looks great
  • Comes with knot picker, clippers, hook sharpener, and jig eye cleaner
  • D-ring with a retractable zinger
  • Great quality

Cons

  • Optimized for fly-fishing
  • Not recommended for thinner lines

Tyepro Fishing Knot Tying Tool

This particular tool is designed for smaller hooks and jigs/lures. If you’re looking for something for larger gear, I recommend you keep scrolling.

When looking for fishing knot tying tools, you always want to find something that can firmly hold your hook/lure/sinker or jig in place, which the Tyepro does well. It comes with a size chart that you should follow as threading and tying onto larger hooks/jigs/lures can become a problem.

Another problem that I found is the need to manually loop and tighten, which is something I feel should already be incorporated into the design. All around, not a bad tool if only used for the smaller tackle.

Pros

  • Larger design for easier line-cutting
  • Line cutting tool
  • Passing the line is very easy
  • Holds hooks, lures, jigs, and sinker securely
  • Easy to follow Instruction manual

Cons

  • Not for larger tackle
  • Quite expensive
  • Need to manually loop and tighten

Clinch Tie Knot Tyer Tool

The Clinch is made from machined brass and stainless steel, giving it a long shelf life and a lifetime warranty. This tool will help you tie up to 15 different knots and also comes with a Snelling tip. It comes with a clip to easily attach to clothing, or for attaching a zinger.

Once again, like the Knot Kneedle, it doesn’t come with a built-in clipper, so that is something else to carry. The Clinch Tie works great with small to medium gear but struggles when attempting heavier gear or bigger lures/jigs.

Controlling the line is a big problem with this product because if you let it get a bit away from you, you’re going to end up with a big mess and have to start again which can be very frustrating.

This product can either make your life easier or very frustrating, depending on how much time you want to put in. But once mastered, it becomes a great companion, and with the lifetime warranty, can be used for years to come.

Pros

  • Lifetime warranty
  • Solid brass and stainless steel construction that won’t rust
  • Can be used in salt or freshwater
  • Can tie up to 15 knots
  • Comes with an instruction book

Cons

  • Hard to keep lines under control
  • Not for bigger lures or jigs
